The Phoenix Women project is delivered as part of the Ministry of Justice women’s services contract in Cleveland, led by Changing Lives.
We aim to empower women to make significant changes that will allow them to move past previous offending and lead an offence free future for themselves and their families. Our work is underpinned by A Way Out’s values of LOVE (unconditionally) HOPE (to change) and FREEDOM (to make decisions).
Offering support to women who are involved with the Criminal Justice system, working closely with Probation staff from Middlesbrough and Redcar. We work on seven specific pathways which include Accommodation, Emotional Well-being. Finance, Benefit and Debt, Family and Significant Others, Lifestyle and Associates Employment, Education and Training and Dependence and Recovery. Women are referred to us by Probation to work on the pathways that are specific to their needs.
The team provide 1-1 support and group work activities, some of the group sessions have included making soothing boxes, creative journaling and healthy relationships. It is always a delight to hear about the positive impact the women feel they gain from the activities planned and provided by the staff team. It is heartwarming for us to actually see an increase in self-esteem, and confidence during a woman’s journey with us.
Christmas can be a difficult and challenging time for many of the women who engage with us and we are fortunate that we can apply for various grants and funding which allows us to support women and their families at times such as this.
“My Christmas was non-existent without your help. I’m having Christmas with my kids for the first time in years and it’s down to you that I can and give them something. Thank You!!!”
Other women have shared how the support offered not just at Christmas, but throughout their time with us has changed their life and given them hope for the future.
It is comments like this that provide the team with a great deal of job satisfaction.
